The Virtual Reality and Active Interfaces (VRAI) Group was founded in 1993. We are part of the Microengineering Department and the Institute of Robotic Systems at EPFL. Our objective is to create innovative and easy-to-use tools for human-machine systems. We are currently working in the areas of medical training (endoscopic surgery simulation), micro-manipulation (design and operation), and remote environments (teleoperation and telepresence).
Our research focuses on techniques needed to build, update and interact with three-dimensional representations of real-world environments. We are developing methods to track, register and visualize input (from users and sensors) as well as to generate output (to actuators and displays). We are using these techniques to perform tasks as disparate as surgical gesture learning and mobile robot teleoperation.
